Aruba - Itinerary

At only twenty miles long, six miles wide and relatively flat, the small Caribbean Island of Aruba might seem an unlikely destination for a mountain bike adventure tour.   However, its rugged natural features and abundant jeep and hiking trails are perfect for cross-country or cyclocross riders.   And, with perfect water and wind conditions, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and sailing are favorite activities in Aruba.

We will soon be releasing details on our March 2009 couples trip - this is an ideal location for riders with varying abilities to share in a mountain bike adventure vacation!

Aruba California lighthouseDay One

Most flights arrive at the Orangestad Airport in the afternoon, which is where you will feel the warm island breeze as you are met and greeted island style by your For The Ride guides.  Guests immediately notice the Dutch influence and rich history of this Caribbean Island.

A short drive from town and we arrive at our carefully selected, well appointed island paradise where guests can settle in for the week - a process usually cut short by an overwhelming desire to feel the fine white sand and warm waters of the nearby beach, before gathering for a night on the town and a delicious Caribbean dinner.

Aruba Cross-CountryDay Two

After breakfast at the beach, we saddle up and ride to the western end of the island passing the California Lighthouse. This 25 mile ride takes you along the rugged north coast of Aruba, passing ancient ruins and other landmarks before turning inland and crossing the midpoint of the island.

Some will spend the afternoon relaxing at the beach - others will learn the fundamentals of kite and board control.

Tonight we take in the sights and sounds of the Aruba night life and begin to appreciate the warm and hospitable Aruban people.

Aruba Adventures Day Three

Today we head back to the northern side of the island and continue our exploration of this relatively undeveloped desert island, including 18% of its land mass that has been designated Arikok National Park.   Extensive hiking and biking trails, goats, and Divi Divi trees criss-cross and dot the landscape.

After some great riding, our guests are treated to lunch and a cool dip in the natural pool - a natural formation only accessible by mountain bike, donkey, or ATV.

Guests have the choice of catching a ride back to our accommodations or riding the return route.

Little Church of ArubaDay Four

Today is dedicated to mastering our chosen beach activity. Having learned the fundamentals of kite and board control, we test our skills for the first time in the water.

Steady offshore trade winds present a challenge to those first mastering any form of wind powered sport.   Whether a kiteboard or windsurfer, those wanting to return to the island will need to learn to cut back into the wind - or wait for a boat to come and rescue you on your way to Venezuela.

We regroup to share tales from the day over dinner.

Aruba WindsurfingDay Five

Today we get back on the bikes for a beautiful ride to the western side of the island - stopping periodically to enjoy snorkeling at one of the many secluded beaches.

Lunch on the far side of the island, away from the main resorts, provides another opportunity to experience the real lives being lived by the Aruban people.

Again, guests have the option of completing the ride back to our island paradise or riding in comfort in our shuttle van.

Aruba Kitesurfing Day Six

As with any new sport, learning to kitesurf is a process - however our course is designed to get riders in the water and on their board quickly. Determination rules the day!

Optional riding will be available.

Aruba OrangestadDay Seven

On our final day, we pack our things, wish farewell to new found friends and a new favorite vacation destination - the Happy Island of Aruba.
